Community Education & Programmes
The work we do in the community is at the forefront of our mission. When we set up our programmes, we look closely at the areas in which we can help, aligning with the Sisters of Mercy and Te Waipuna Puawai’s values of meeting the unmet needs of the community through invitation.
Our programmes and initiatives are guided by three core themes:
Papatūānuku: fostering earth awareness and responding to the call to heal the environment
Te Tiriti o Waitangi: commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and working in ways that work for Māori whānau and communities
Tikanga Atawhai: the practice of Mercy values
We provide community education classes and programmes to address the needs of women in the local community. Through self-development and culturally-based programmes, we focus on physical, mental, spiritual and whānau well-being.
As of Term 4, 2025 we offer our Community Education & Programmes at Umere with a slow roll-out at Glendene, and Counselling at Rānui.

Waiata Tioriori
Are you tired of singing the same waiata? It’s time to freshen up your kete with waiata tautoko, waiata tawhito, and even a haka boogie or two. We're not just learning songs — we connect, have fun, and boost confidence to help you use your voice proudly at hui and celebrations. Every song carries a story, and every voice adds to the wairua of the group.
Whether you want to be the songbird who kicks off the next hui, or simply join in the festive spirit as we spread Christmas cheer, this is for you. Bring your voice, your wairua, and your smile — we’ll take care of the rest. Nau mai, haere mai whānau!
Waiata Tioriori with Sophie runs every Monday during Term 4, 2025 from 10am to 12pm.
Healthy Babies, Healthy Futures
In partnership with Te Punā Manawā Trust, this four-week wānanga focuses on hauora through Te Whare Tapa Whā. Each session takes a holistic approach, weaving together physical activity (kori tinana), māra kai kōrero (gardening and food discussions), and reflective learning to strengthen all four walls of wellbeing: taha tinana, taha hinengaro, taha whānau, and taha wairua. It’s a space for mums to connect, learn, and grow alongside others who are on their own hauora journey.
You’ll also gain access to free online nutrition courses and resources to support your learning at home, and take part in practical kai workshops designed for every stage of whānau life — from hapū māmā and pēpi to tamariki and parents. Together, we’ll explore simple, affordable, and nourishing ways to prepare kai that supports you and your whānau to thrive.
From the 11th of November, Healthy Babies, Healthy Futures will run for four-weeks every Tuesday from 11am to 1pm at our Umere office.
