Community Education & Programmes

The work we do in the community is at the forefront of our mission. When we set up our programmes, we look closely at the areas in which we can help, aligning with the Sisters of Mercy and Te Waipuna Puawai’s values of meeting the unmet needs of the community through invitation.

Our programmes and initiatives are guided by three core themes:

  • Papatūānuku: fostering earth awareness and responding to the call to heal the environment

  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi: commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and working in ways that work for Māori whānau and communities

  • Tikanga Atawhai: the practice of Mercy values

We provide community education classes and programmes to address the needs of women in the local community. Through self-development and culturally-based programmes, we focus on physical, mental, spiritual and whānau well-being.

As of Term 1, 2026 we offer our Community Education & Programmes at Umere with a slow roll-out at Glendene, and Counselling at Rānui.

Wheiao Reo Wānanga

Wheiao Reo Wānanga offers a supportive, engaging space for beginners starting their Te Reo journey, weaving Māori philosophy throughout learning and introduces key Te Ao Māori concepts, including pepeha, mihi, whakapapa, and simple everyday kōrero. You’ll also experience introductory practices such as Māori activities, mau rākau, theology, and identity.

Taught by Tāmati Patuwai (Ngāti Whātua), a proud Glen Innes boy. Tāmati brings strong knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori, creating a learning space where all ages feel welcome and leave with practical skills and deeper understanding.

During Term 2 2026, Wheiao Reo Wānanga runs every Monday from 10am to 12pm at our Umere office from the 4th of May.

Waiata Tīoriori

Are you tired of singing the same waiata? It’s time to freshen up your kete with waiata tautoko, waiata tawhito, and even a haka boogie or two. We're not just learning songs — we connect, have fun, and boost confidence to help you use your voice proudly at hui and celebrations. Every song carries a story, and every voice adds to the wairua of the group.

Whether you want to be the songbird who kicks off the next hui, or simply join in and spread some happiness, this is for you. Bring your voice, your wairua, and your smile — we’ll take care of the rest. Nau mai, haere mai whānau!

Waiata Tīoriori with Sophie runs every Tuesday during Term 2, 2026 from 10am to 12pm at our Umere office from the 28th of April.

He Kākahu Hauora

A journey of whakapapa, strength, and belonging, all woven together through the sacred art of korowai. Learn the foundations of weaving, working with whenu, casting on and layering textures. Every stitch tells a story, every thread binds the past to the present. As hands shape the cloak, the weaver is shaped, strengthening their sense of self, purpose and belonging.

Join Whaea Naomi as she takes you on this journey of self-discovery and traditional Māori arts and crafts. During Term 2 2026, He Kākahu Hauora runs every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm at our Umere office from the 29th of April.

Term 2 2026 Workshops Coming Soon!
